Over the years, I have learnt from my experience some golden rules every speaker should follow to reach the pinnacle of public speaking. In part one; we will enlighten you with the five nuggets.
Proper preparation prevents poor performance. Prepare your speech early and rehearse with passion. This ensures enhanced confidence and a well-oiled delivery.
Be yourself: Copying someone else’s delivery style or content is a sure recipe for disaster. You will appear artificial and stiff. Great speakers have had varied speaking styles because their credibility was derived from their personalities and the intensity of their messages. (Consider, for example, the distinct speaking styles of Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi.) Narrate stories and experiences from your life, as well as what you believe in, and be yourself. That is the way to convey sincerity and credibility.
Allow enough time: Spend time gathering information about the topic as well as your audience's values, attitudes, current problems, and desired benefits.
Prepare well for Q & A: A crucial element that brings credibility to the speaker is how he or she handles the Q & A session. This session also provides an opportunity for the speaker to finish on a high note. To ensure the success of your presentation know your material well.
Be mentally prepared: Unexpected changes in the venue, hall, timing, and duration of the talk may occur. Be flexible about adapting to these changes and also about skipping or altering parts of your presentation. Have a plan "B".
We will continue the remaining part of the nuggets of public speaking in our next article.
